Tips: Safety Issues

There are several common types of safety issues with signs that Sign-GrafX feels you should be aware of:

  • Weather Damage
  • Electrical Hazards
  • Fire Damage
  • Vandalism
  • Accidents
  • Unsafe Work Habits
If your sign is well engineered, built and maintained it should hold up for many years through the normal extremes of weather. As the sign ages, structural stress points will weaken due to rust, vibration and fatigue. Plastic will deteriorate and get brittle; glass will crack and shatter; electrical components and wiring will short and burn out. The accumulation of water and ice, dirt, dead bugs, rust, rot, and even algae inside the sign will work against it.

Electrical signs are the most vulnerable to these problems. These signs should be checked periodically, perhaps on an annual basis, inside and out, to see how they are aging, and to correct problems before they get dangerous. Approach any electrical sign with great care, and be sure the power is shut off when you are handling it. Every sign repairman has stories about getting shocked, thrown off a ladder or even trapped by an unforeseen electrical short. Don't become a casualty!

Even the simplest non-electrical signs can become unsafe, as brackets and fasteners loosen, rust and wear out, as the posts, frame, wall or rooftop rot away. Be sure your insurance policy adequately includes your signage, both for damage and liability coverage.

If you are working on your own sign, off the ground, be extremely careful with ladders and power lines. Don't get within 12 feet of any overhead power cables. Always have a helper with you to watch your back, to avoid potential trouble, and "save your butt" in case of trouble. Be especially careful in wet, icy, or windy situations. Always call Dig-Safe (1-888-344-7233), at least a week ahead, if you need to dig anywhere near the street. Dig-Safe will check for and mark underground utilities so you don't accidentally cause a major disaster.
